Ce qui choque en premier lieu, c’est la voix. Vache, Adrian WESTIN, le chanteur n’est pas content. Il ferait presque passer Corey TAYLOR de SLIPKNOT pour un petit chanteur à la croix de yaourt. Et aux fruits des bois en plus ! Limite Petit-suisse !
Mais passée la première surprise, ben on s’aperçoit que c’est la seule ! Je le dis sincèrement, je n’ai rien contre ces groupes qui pratiquent le metalcore comme on dit chez vous. Mais à force, on dirait du ruban adhésif vendu au kilomètre, et quand ça commence à trop coller, on se passe les mains sous l’eau. J’ai swingué sur KILLSWITCH ENGAGE. J’ai groové sur CROSSBREED. J’ai même dansé le quadrille sur DOWN THE SUN. Mais le gros problème de tous les autres, c’est soit qu’ils arrivent après, ou bien qu’ils n’ont pas su saisir toute la variété que peut offrir ce style. Ce qui est malheureusement le cas de BY NIGHT. Après un split cd, et un premier album, Burn The Flags l’année dernière, ils reviennent avec leur troisième offrande sonore, A New Shape Of Desperation. Et on ne peut pas dire que ça causera un séisme d’échelle mondiale dans le monde du Metal.
BY NIGHT est l’archétype du groupe à voir sur scène, parce que l’énergie du concert est là. Mais sur cd, c’est une autre affaire. Ce qu’on demande à un cd, c’est de proposer des idées variées pour ne pas avoir l’impression d’écouter la même piste en boucle, ou bien, lorsqu’on évolue dans un style bien particulier, déjà pratiqué par des dizaines d’autres, de se démarquer des idées de base pour donner un peu de fraîcheur. Cet album n’applique que très rarement ces deux préceptes. Le son est là (mais qui ne l’a pas de nos jours ?), la hargne aussi, le chanteur plein de haine, les grosses guitares et la batterie en furie aussi. Mais ça, c’est comme écrire un polar avec un meurtre au début, un héros désabusé, une blonde vénéneuse, et une ambiance moite. C’est ce qu’on appelle le matériau de base. Apres, il faut transcender tout ça pour laisser au lecteur une impression de nouveauté. Quand j’ai écouté A New Shape Of Desperation, je n’ai dressé l’oreille qu’à partir du sixième morceau, ce qui n’est pas bon signe. Les cinq premiers sont d’une banalité metalcore déconcertante. « Dead Eyes See No Future », le titre en question possède une bonne intro, et une ambiance très glauque. Il est de plus très heavy, et détonne par rapport au début de l’album. « Walls Of Insecure » ensuite propose quelques breaks imaginatifs bienvenus, qui aèrent l’ensemble. « Idiot » distille 55 secondes de rage pure, blast-beats à l’appui. Mais on retombe vite dans la même routine au dixième morceau, jusqu’à la fin. Et c’est dommage. On aurait bien voulu aimer ce groupe, pas pire qu’un autre. Mais le juger de la sorte, revient en fait dans l’esprit à condamner tous les groupes ne faisant pas preuve d’assez de recherche pour être considérés comme intéressants. J’ai comme l’impression que le metalcore, plus encore que le grind, n’avait de choses intéressantes à dire qu’à sa naissance, que depuis tout tourne en rond. « Très jeune, on a de l'originalité, mais pas de talent » disait Jules RENARD. Après, c’est l’inverse.
