Pour ce nouvel album solo, Marty Friedman renoue avec le Heavy Metal et nous balance une grosse dose de riffs. On attaque avec l’énorme « Elixir » qui donne le ton : gros son et riffs taillés à la hache, on pense parfois à ANNIHILATOR. Friedman est énervé, il a besoin de se défouler. Nos oreilles vont déguster ! La plupart des morceaux sont ainsi plombés par de gros accords lourds et gras donnant à cet album une véritable identité Heavy. Que le rythme soit rapide ou lent (« Stygmata Addiction »), Friedman met sa six-cordes au service de la puissance de feu.
Sur la seconde partie de l’album, le virtuose sait aussi nous offrir des titres plus « lyriques » comme « Glycerine Flesh », « Viper » ou « Static Rain » sur lesquels les riffs s’effacent, remplacés par les phrasés et solos mélodieux. Le paroxysme est atteint avec « Devil Take Tomorrow », une ballade instrumentale qui clôt cet album en douceur.
L’ensemble reste très démonstratif, bien sûr, de très nombreux solos surgissent sur chaque titre ou presque. Cela nous fournit une occasion supplémentaire de constater à quel point Friedman maîtrise son instrument. Mais il est appréciable qu’il ne se soit pas adressé uniquement aux connaisseurs ; il a pensé aux néophytes en leur livrant un album de Heavy, certes technique et riche, mais non dénué d’énergie et de feeling.
On notera aussi la participation de quelques invités prestigieux : outre l’excellent bassiste Masaki, on trouve Billy Sheehan, le batteur Jeremy Colson (Steve Vai), Jens Johanssen (STRATOVARIUS, ex-Malmsteen) aux claviers, et Steve Vai lui-même sur « Viper ». Hélas la participation de ce dernier n’est qu’anecdotique car il n’a pas beaucoup de latitude pour s’exprimer (bon, sauf un passage vraiment barré) et ses quelques frasques sont vite effacées par le style plus conventionnel de Friedman.
