Il est des albums qui marquent un style, et cet Angels of Distress, deuxième album des finlandais de SHAPE OF DESPAIR est incontestablement devenu une référence du Funeral Doom. Cet album est sorti un an après Shades of…, ce qui est un laps de temps assez court, particulièrement pour un tel groupe qui peaufine au maximum la qualité des ambiances dans ses morceaux. Il comprend 5 titres dont la durée oscille entre 8 et 16 minutes et au regard du disque éponyme sorti à la fin de l’été 2005 regroupant nombre de démos des débuts du groupe jusqu’alors, on comprend que plusieurs des morceaux de Angels of Distress étaient en gestation depuis plusieurs années et que cela explique pourquoi cet album est arrivé relativement rapidement après le premier.
D’emblée, on est frappé par le manque d’information accompagnant le disque. Sur un digipack à l’artwork froid et dépouillé (les musiciens se cachant derrière de simples initiales) et sitôt les premières notes de l’album passées on comprend que cette sobriété s’imposait. En effet, on est immédiatement plongé dans les ténèbres par un clavier menaçant qui va introduire des guitares d’une lourdeur rare et la voix exceptionnellement gutturale de Pasi Koskinen (ex-AMORPHIS, AJATTARA, TO SEPARATE FLESH FROM THE BONE,…) rendue encore plus inhumaine par son doublement systématique en studio, ce qui ne manquera pas de surprendre les fans qui ne le connaissaient que par AMORPHIS. Sa voix est à l’autre bout du spectre parfaitement contrebalancée par les vocalises spectrales et blafardes de Natalie Safroskin qui, à cent lieues d’édulcorer la musique du leader/compositeur Jarno Saloma, la rendent encore plus frissonnante et obscure. A l’instar des leads de guitare aériens qui se greffent sur des accords plombés au possible. Les claviers ne sont, eux, jamais en reste puisqu’ils tissent la plupart du temps la trame du morceau et donnent avec l’aide ponctuelle du violon ce côté atmosphérique qui distingue définitivement SHAPE OF DESPAIR des autres groupes de Funeral Doom. Les morceaux tournent en général autour de deux ou trois parties qui évoluent progressivement pour instiller des atmosphères quasi-hypnotiques. Ce qui me fait dire que SHAPE OF DESPAIR, même s’ils contribuent à populariser un style des plus extrêmes, n’est définitivement pas un groupe que l’on écoute en club ou en voiture mais dans la solitude et le recueillement, comme la bande originale de son propre vague à l’âme et qui nous fait prendre un peu plus conscience à chaque fois que de la tristesse se dégage une infinie beauté. Mention spéciale à « Night’s dew », l’instrumentale qui clôt l’album pour évoquer si parfaitement cette marche nocturne dans une nature sans horizon noyée par le brouillard.
Tragiquement beau.
