DAMNATION ARMY : pour le plus grand nombre d’entre nous, ce nom n’évoque absolument rien et pourtant Tyrant (qui sort chez Mascot Records) est le troisième album de ces… euh de ce suédois Thomas Nyholm, sorti sous le nom de DAMNATION ARMY. Il faut dire que les premiers opus n’ont pas bénéficié d’une promotion honnête, et que les skeuds : The Art Of The Occult (2004) et Misanthropic Satanarchy (2003), sortis chez God Is Myth étaient des éditions limitées.
DAMNATION ARMY est donc le projet de l’homme à tout faire (Guitare, basse, batterie et chant) Thomas Nyholm, et le moins que l’on puisse dire, c’est que sa musique est très inspirée par le Black plus posé, plus mature avec des grosses influences Heavy comme sur les derniers albums de SATYRICON ou de DISIPLIN.
Les tempos sont assez variés, bien qu’une impression de lourdeur et de lenteur se fasse parfois ressentir. Les riffs simples, mélodiques, efficaces et accrocheurs ne révolutionnent pas le genre et donnent même un coté « old school » vraiment plaisant (« Enchanted By The Mystical Fire »). La voix saturée, criarde et sombre est dans la lignée du chant de Satyr.
Coté mixage, on aurait souhaité une batterie plus furieuse et moins en sourdine, car cela affaiblit la puissance des morceaux qui font headbanger sans s’en rendre compte comme sur « A Dagger Right In Your Heart »! Enfin l’album est quand même taillé pour les guitares, dont les riffs lourds sont mis en avant par des blasts furieux, et entre coupés de passages très mélodiques (« Soldier Of The Damned »).
Très à l'aise dans la lenteur épaisse et étouffante que dans le martelage des tempos, DAMNATION ARMY se plie aux règles du genre c’est à dire morceaux aux structures carrés qui n’oublient pas les nombreuses mélodies sombres. Mélodies que n’auraient reniées ni KHOLD, ni DISIPLIN ou même HYPOCRISY sur le titre très mid tempo « Dalia ».
Bref Tyrant ne révolutionne pas le genre mais il est foutrement ravageur et atrocement efficace !
