Dans le style, "mon groupe habituel ne fait pas assez de bruit, je vais en faire un autre", je vous présente RED SPAROWES. Avec, dans les rôles principaux Bryant Clifford Meyer, guitariste d’ISIS, combo hautement recommandable, frères d’armes de NEUROSIS, groupe représenté ici par Josh Graham, artisan vidéaste mettant en images les cauchemars sonores de Scott Kelly et de Steve Von Till, ses petits copains de jeu. NEUROSIS, on connaît, pas de surprises. Du hard-core furieux et politisé de Pain Of Mind, aux hallucinations apocalyptiques de Times Of Grace, c’est un groupe qui n’a jamais déçu, ni en studio, ni en live. ISIS, quant à eux, proposent plus ou moins la même recette, morceaux interminables, larsens, riffs lourds et répétitifs, voix d’écorché vif.
Mais qu’en est-il de leur réunion ? Vont-ils s’éloigner de leur style originel, ou bien mettre leurs forces en commun pour parachever une œuvre déjà bien entamée ? Et bien, la réponse n’est pas si simple. Certes, on retrouve les arguments chers à nos protagonistes, notamment en ce qui concerne la durée des titres, le coté hypnotique des mélodies, si tant est qu’on puisse les appeler ainsi. Mais il y a une différence de taille. Puisque dans RED SPAROWES, point de chant.
Alors, ce qui dans NEUROSIS fait tout le "charme" du concept, à savoir les deux chanteurs aux tonalités bien différentes, ici fait cruellement défaut. Supporter 9 minutes d’extrémisme bruitiste quand on a deux vocalistes charismatiques (ou un seul dans ISIS), c’est très jouable, mais dans ce cas précis, et surtout pendant plus d’une heure, ça devient une gageure.
Bon, ok me direz vous, le style n’est pas à l’identique. La plupart du temps, on a même l’impression d’avoir affaire a un album de rock progressif des années 70 perdu dans les bacs pendant 30 ans. C’est surtout vrai sur un titre comme « A Message Of Avarice Rained Down Upon Us », ou on se croirait dans les chutes de studio de Dark Side Of The Moon du FLOYD.
La prod aussi donne cette impression, pas désagréable d’ailleurs. Et certains morceaux, suffisamment variés, tel « As That Blazing Sun Shone Down Upon Us », restent très faciles à digérer.
Alors considérons cet album comme une parenthèse, une escapade que ces musiciens s’accorderaient dans une forêt mystérieuse après avoir connu les ténèbres d’une grotte, et ses bruits effrayants. Car contrairement à ISIS ou NEUROSIS, une réelle impression de paix se dégage de ce cd. Pas le genre de trucs qu’on se met pour avoir la pêche, ou pour une soirée entre amis, mais faites l’expérience. Allongez vous sur votre lit. Mettez le casque. Balancez la musique. Et vous pénétrerez dans un monde harmonique inconnu, avec ses chemins louvoyant au milieu d’arbres frissonnants, de ruisseaux limpides et de sylphides aux formes étherées chantant la gloire de la nature.
Un voyage gratuit de nos jours, ça ne se refuse pas. Surtout s’il n’y a pas de retour…
