Les Toulousains d’OPENIGHTMARE sont de retour, accompagnés d’humour et de leur ironie mordante, en témoigne la biographie jointe à l’album… Pour ceux qui ne les connaissent pas, le groupe évolue dans un genre qui reste toujours aussi difficile à définir, comme c’était déjà le cas avec leur premier album Sliced By A Turbomachine (ndr : dont la chronique est disponible ICI). Sur un fond de Punk Rock inquiétant, on retrouve des mélodies étranges, parfois crades, allant du Stoner à la Pop. Malgré un melting pot plutôt atypique, on ressent beaucoup plus d’homogénéité dans les différentes compositions, notamment grâce à des changements subtiles et souvent bien sentis. En effet, le groupe a su gérer ce trop plein d’influences et organise ses idées de façon très judicieuse, atteignant parfois un niveau de composition très intéressant. La mélodie dissonante de « Days Away » alternée avec ce riff alambiqué nous entraîne dans un paysage étrange, sombre, presque malsain, tandis que « Do It Yourself » qui démarre toute en puissance témoigne de l’énergie grandissante du groupe.
Point de peur pour OPENIGHTMARE, s’autorisant une mignonne petite reprise de DEPECHE MODE avec le titre « I Just Can’t Get Hénaff », ou encore triturant le Post-Rock et le Punk pour en former des titres comme « Botticelli ». Sans oublier l’hymne Punk dédiée à leur collectif To Loose Punkers (oui il y a bien un jeu de mots là dedans) qui se révèle plutôt amusante. Dans tout ça, on remarque quand même le travaille assez poussé que fournissent les guitares. Ce que je pense être le point fort du groupe d’ailleurs, rien qu’en écoutant les morceaux Intro et Outreau par exemple.
Par ailleurs, même si le chanteur possède une belle voix, un peu plus de folie tirerait sérieusement les compositions vers le haut, c’est dommage. On peut aussi regretter le manque de puissance de la part de la batterie, elle ne rend pas souvent justice a l’énergie déployée et à certaines subtilités accordées à nos oreilles. En outre, la production se révèle être plutôt bonne malgré les dires de certains…
Pour finir, on tient là un disque sans prétention mais plutôt intéressant et agréable, à découvrir pour les plus curieux d’entre vous.
