N’ayant jamais pu vraiment percer sur la scène internationale, OBSCENITY n’en reste pas moins une valeur sûre de Death Metal classique en Allemagne et en Europe. En effet, formé à l’orée de la saison 1989-1990, le groupe Allemand compte pas moins de sept albums avec la sortie du petit dernier cette année Where Sinners Bleed. Eternel challenger de formations phares comme DEICIDE ou encore SIX FEET UNDER, le quintet originaire d’Oldenbourg n’a pourtant jamais perdu la foi en sa musique ni en eux-mêmes.
Avec autant d’albums de qualité, il apparaît fort surprenant que OBSCENITY n’ait jamais pu faire son trou dans le milieu. La faute à leur ancien label Morbid Records ? Toujours est-il que pour la sortie de Where Sinners Bleed, le combo Germanique a passé un deal avec le label Armageddon Music, semble-t-il plus à même d’asseoir OBSCENITY comme une valeur sûre du Death Metal Européen.
Leur précédent dernier opus Cold Blooded Murder étant chez les disquaires depuis quatre ans, cette septième offrande aux Dieux du Death Metal paraissait attendue par les nombreux fans que compte le groupe.
Disciples d ‘un Death Metal old-school renouant avec les canons standards du début des années 90, OBSCENITY compte à son avantage un sens du rythme et du riff très affûté. Le son des guitares résonnant presque comme des rythmiques Grind apporte une lourdeur louable aux dix morceaux présents sur la galette. Agrémenté d’un chant tout en puissance et d’une batterie exécutant son travail de manière honorable, seules les lignes de basse du bassiste de DEW SCENTED n’apportent pas grand chose puisque pour la plupart du temps pratiquement inaudibles. Moult influences Thrash se font ressentir au travers de ces titres comme sur « Obsessed With Slavery » ou « Die Again ». L’essentiel y est : blastbeats, double grosses caisses bétonnées, mid-tempos, passages tantôt lourds, tantôt sur-vitaminés, riffs ravageurs. Tout au long de la rondelle, OBSCENITY ne nous déçoit pas et c’est sans fioritures que les hommes du Nord de l’Allemagne proposent des titres aussi ravageurs que « Mutate to Scourge Infecdead » ou les excellents titres plus «réfléchis» « Incomplete » ou « The Bullet That Kills » sonnant presque comme du CANNIBAL CORPSE. Du point de vue des soli, encore une bonne surprise puisque la paire de guitaristes Bruns/Finger propose des soli courts et plutôt efficaces. Bref, un bon album de Death Metal old-school qui vous fera passer un excellent moment.
Un Death Metal puissant et inspiré, voilà ce qu’il vous attendra avec Where Sinners Bleed. Compagnons pécheurs, apprêtez-vous à saigner abondamment…
