Ce premier album de THALIDOMIDE nous met dans la peau d'un jeune découvrant le Metal. Au détour d'une rue, notre adolescent entre dans une boutique improbable, se dirige vers le rayon Metal à la recherche de classiques à un prix abordable et, à la lettre T, entre TESTAMENT et THERION, il tombe sur Le paradis du Mal. La pochette a tout de l'autoprod mais elle dégage quelque chose de troublant où l'ange se fait démon, Marie, Lilith et le Sauveur, Antichrist. Curieux, il se coiffe d'écouteurs mis à sa disposition et appuie sur la touche Play. C'est alors que les passants de l'autre côté de la vitrine commencent à perdre de leur netteté avant de disparaître complètement ; l'ado ferme les yeux et prend conscience d'un autre monde.
Dans un style différent, orienté Thrash, THALIDOMIDE a cette aptitude à reproduire une atmosphère qui ne me semblait être jusqu'alors que l'apanage du Black Metal norvégien, rien de moins. Dès « Les maîtres de l'illusion », sur fond de guitares disharmoniques et une voix au timbre Black, le combo nous offre près de 7 minutes de breaks multiples et monstrueux. THALIDOMIDE n'ambitionne pas de nous submerger sous des riffs alliant rapidité et technicité : le groupe travaille principalement la structure musicale de ses morceaux et les silences eux-mêmes s'apparentent à des notes dans ces mélodies lugubres et extrêmes. Si les lyrics en français surprennent de prime abord, ils s'immiscent rapidement dans le cortex de l'auditeur et cela peut sembler bien peu de choses mais la deuxième personne du singulier utilisée dans « Les maîtres de l'illusion » se révèle assez dévastateur.
Sur « Les clones programmés », la basse se fait la part belle sur fond de riffs bien gras à la LOUDBLAST, ce qui ne fait que renforcé l'atmosphère pesante et possédée qui se dégage de ce Paradis du Mal, avant de finir sur une guitare sèche mélancolique.
« Le règne de l'innommable » est pour sa part plus agressif avec des relents de PESTILENCE. Retour au primat de l'atmosphère avec « Les fléaux de l'obscurantisme », ses riffs lancinants et un solo aux harmonies dérangeantes.
THALIDOMIDE parvient à se maintenir à son plus haut niveau sur les compos suivantes avec ses nombreux breaks - des sonorités jazzy au guitar hero - et ses aigus à la guitare, aptes à vous lézarder les parois auditives…
Si à l'écoute de cet album, d'autres noms viennent à l'esprit, comme GOJIRA ou MORBID ANGEL (période Heretic), THALIDOMIDE a ce charme supplémentaire que lui confère sa production, plus crue, plus charnelle.
Retrouver l'essence du Metal extrême : un défi relevé par THALIDOMIDE dès son première album. Une véritable prouesse ! La tentation de mettre la note maximale est là, mais laissons-nous une marge de manœuvre au cas où ils feraient encore mieux la prochaine fois.
Et notre adolescent me direz-vous ? J'ai bien peur qu'il ne soit perdu dans les limbes du Metal… pour toujours.
(ndr : Thalidomide : médicament vendu dans les années 1950-1960 comme anxiolytique et pour prévenir les nausées chez les femmes enceintes. Il s'avéra par la suite que ce médicament provoquait de profondes malformations chez les fœtus).
