LUNATICA s’était fait remarquer avec son opus précédent, Fables & Dreams, qui, faute de révolutionner le genre, disposait de suffisamment de qualités pour rendre son écoute agréable et constituait une excellente base pour une carrière qu’on espérait prometteuse.
Hélas, le groupe se perd un peu en chemin. Il ne faut pas chercher bien loin la cause de cette baisse de régime : la qualité des compositions est franchement inférieure. LUNATICA se contente de nous livrer un Hard Rock symphonique et mélodique standard, archi formaté.
Tout débute par une intro aussi dispensable que celle du précédent album. Mais là où Fables & Dreams enchaînait sur l’excellent « Avallon », on doit ici se contenter de l’insipide « The Edge Of Infinity ». En réponse à une écriture peu inspirée, Andrea Dätwyler applique des lignes de chant manquant de conviction. C’est particulièrement marquant sur « Together » mais cela s’applique à la quasi totalité des titres symphonique. C’est dommage car sa voix est toujours aussi belle. Le morceau « Emocean » est présent avec 2 versions différentes dont l’une est enregistrée en duo avec Oliver Hartmann. Là encore le résultat est plaisant mais pas à la hauteur de notre attente.
Du côté des points positifs il faut admettre que le groupe a gagné en maturité. Notamment sur les parties orchestrées qui ont pris de l’ampleur et qui s’intègrent parfaitement aux compositions. Sur ce point LUNATICA se détache du lot de groupes officiant dans ce style.
La ballade « Who You Are » n’est pas inoubliable mais elle fonctionne plutôt bien. De même que le duo « Song For You » avec John Payne (ex-ASIA). Mais c’est surtout « Out ! » qui retient l’attention. Ce single est un hit en puissance, un concentré d’efficacité et d’émotion qui reluque clairement du côté d’EVANESCENCE. Il relève nettement le niveau.
Le groupe assure une production tout aussi remarquable que sur l’album précédent. L’ensemble est mixé par Sascha Paeth et Miro (KAMELOT, RHAPSODY, ANGRA).
The Edge Of Infinity n’est pas un mauvais album, on peut même dire qu’il s’écoute agréablement. Mais il n’est clairement pas à la hauteur des espérances que l’on pouvait placer dans ce groupe. Trop de convenances, trop de platitudes, pas assez de... beaucoup de choses.
