C’est en ces beaux jours de grosses chaleurs que les Norvégiens de STONEGARD décident de nous rééditer leur premier opus sous le nom de Arrows. Il est assez difficile de définir précisément leur style. On ressent fortement des influences provenant de genres qui fonctionnent en ce moment comme la NWOHM pour l’aspect mélodique ou encore le Death pour la technique. Cependant un élément plus surprenant vient s’immiscer dans ce quartet et titille ma curiosité… La voix. Instrumentalement, avouons-le, il n’y a rien de très original. L’ensemble sonne comme la plupart des groupes de Metal actuel du genre IN FLAMES, TRIVIUM (et oui) ou encore CHIMAIRA. Mais on avait encore jamais vu un groupe posé une voix Stoner/Rock par-dessus un tel mélange. Intéressant non ? A la croisée entre Josh Hommes (KYUSS), Maynard James Keenan (TOOL) et James Hetfield (METALLICA), ce chant apporte véritablement un vent de fraîcheur sur cet album. S’ajoutant à des riffs syncopés tout en restant mélodique, l’efficacité se fait redoutable, notamment sur le titre « Arrows » qui restera selon moi le meilleur de l’album. La batterie vient apporter la puissance nécessaire à l’aboutissement de cette formation, appuyée par la production massive opérée par Daniel Bergstrand (IN FLAMES, MESHUGGAH).
Cependant, au bout de quelques titres, une certaine monotonie se fait sentir, comme c’est souvent le cas pour les formations de ce genre qui ont du mal à se renouveler sans se répéter, et sans se fourvoyer non plus. Heureusement que le chant est toujours là pour nous éviter de trop nous ennuyer. Sur « Barricades » par exemple, on est complètement transporté par ses cris Rock n’ Roll pleins de vivacité et de charme. Un régal.
Au final, on se retrouve avec un album sympathique qui propose sa petite touche sucrée… Mais sans rien proposer de totalement nouveau non plus. On se lasse assez rapidement. Un album qui ravira donc les fans du genre répétitif qu’est le Metal actuel.
