UNDER EDEN trouve ses origines dans le Metal underground du Minnesota, aux Etats-Unis. Le quatuor formé fin 2000 administre un Thrash typique Américain auquel il agrémente par dessus un Death couleur or et bleu façon Suédoise. Le groupe, fondé par le duo des frères Mc Atee, Ryan s’occupant des guitares, basses et autres backing vocals, son frère Christian se chargeant des parties de guitares, a posé les bases de ce que sera leur premier album en 2003 au travers d’une démo qui mélangeait déjà leur goût pour les mélodies complexes saupoudrées d’agressivité. L’an 2005 voit apparaître cette nouvelle formation avec ce premier opus studio The Savage Circle. D’après le label, il s’agit du nouvel espoir de la scène Death Metalcore, avec un son et une production massive dans la veine de HATEBREED.
Navré de saper leur enthousiasme et de ruiner tous leurs espoirs, mais UNDER EDEN est bien loin d’avoir acquis ces qualités et d’avoir trouvé le Graal. La production, pour commencer, s’avère décevante. Bien loin du son des albums d’HATEBREED. Première publicité mensongère. Le son sonne trop vieillot, trop brut et rempli d’acariens tant la poussière est présente et a du mal à faire décoller les morceaux.
Deuxièmement, qu’on nous dise qu’on a entre les mains la nouvelle révélation du Death Metalcore Américain, on ne peut s’empêcher d’avoir un sourire narquois. Deuxième tromperie. Le groupe dodeline entre un bon vieux Thrash des familles soutenu par du Death basique, surtout au point de vu des voix. Eric Thon, le leader vocal sort des sentiers battus et évolue dans plusieurs registres. Il n’es t pas limité, de même que la techniques des frères Mc Atee qui ne sont à priori pas des manchots.
Les titres ne sont pas mauvais, loin de là, les morceaux sont relativement dynamiques et les riffs et autres structures plus d’une fois intéressantes. Mais il manque plusieurs paramètres pour rendre cet album un tantinet convaincant et qui surtout tienne la route.
En effet, les Américains livrent tout de même des morceaux totalement ridicules comme « Veil of Twilight » et son refrain ridicule au possible. Seul le solo final vaut à la limite le détour. Malgré une certaine qualité, on s’ennuie ferme, et ce même après plusieurs écoutes, histoire de leur laisser le bénéfice du doute. Même comme çà, on ne peut que se rendre à l’évidence : c’est raté, il n’y a pas d’homogénéité dans la suites des titres, ceux ci s’enchaînent sans grande cohérence. Le tout manque cruellement de puissance, le plus minable de groupe Punk du fin fond du Dakota proposerait une production et un son nettement plus burné.
A l’image de la pochette de l’opus, il faut à tout prix éviter que le serpent « Jormungandr » se morde la queue. Premier devoir médiocre, des efforts sont attendus pour le second trimestre. Cours du soir conseillés pour rattraper le niveau…
