Parmi toutes les excellentes sorties nordiques du moment (SATYRICON, IHSHAN…), il en est une qui mérite d’attirer l’attention, c’est Kvass le nouvel album de KAMPFAR, groupe cult de Black Metal Viking Norvégien formé en 1994 et qui a pris une direction un peu plus épique avec cet album. Après des albums terribles de Black Viking comme Mellom Skogkledde Aaser et Fra Underverdenen (autant le dire tout de suite : je suis un fan de ce groupe !), KAMPFAR propose Kvass, sa troisième production, chez Napalm Records qui va en profiter pour rééditer les deux premiers skeuds du combos, devenus très difficile à trouver.
Les 6 titres qui composent cet album piochent dans des éléments de Black minimaliste mais agrémentés d’une bonne dose de sonorité viking et païenne pour glacer votre sang. Comment ne pas devenir fasciné par une atmosphère aussi extrême et entraînante telles de grandes marches ou traversées guerrières. Evoluant dans un Black Metal épique et païen du genre de GRAVELAND agrémentées de sonorités plus nauséabondes et lancinantes, KAMPFAR accélère aussi violemment le rythme qu’il peut freiner ses ardeurs et totalement s’extérioriser avec des plans d’une pesanteur déclenchant un certain malaise.
Il y a beaucoup de mélodies, la plupart des morceaux sont variés, les guitares ne répètent pas le même riff à l’infini, le rythme général est à la fois modéré puis beaucoup plus rapide par moment. Les vocaux de Dolk sont écorchés et criards au maximum, cet homme excelle en la matière. Kvass est dans la même veine que les vieux enregistrements de GRAVELAND et ce n'est pas une mauvaise chose, au contraire car la production claire (mais pas si propre que ça) mets bien en évidence les ambiances voulues par le son des guitares et de la basse.
L’album est compact et les titres liés par la même démarche musicale, pourtant chaque morceau est unique et peut être mis en valeur par rapport au suivant ou au précédent. Ravenheart et Hat Og Avind avec leur durée proche des 10 minutes, sont des hymnes brillants d'art noir ! Gaman Av Drommer vous transporte dans une forêt sombre et enneigée dans un style de vie totalement païen : bienvenu en Norvège ! Une fois de plus KAMPAR dont les productions sont assez rares, fournit un superbe album.
