Illusion’s Play est le troisième album proposé par les rois du Doom/Death/Dépressif des finlandais de SHAPE OF DISPAIR. Un album de plus d'une heure pour 6 chansons aux titres bien peu chaleureux. Le groupe recherche la tristesse et la dépression à travers des ambiances planantes et aériennes. Avec ce nouvel opus, le groupe fait preuve d'une nouvelle richesse de composition hors norme, intégrant une musique encore plus vaporeuse et sereine dans leur marche funéraire. SHAPE OF DISPAIR a évolué. Certes les riffs sont toujours d’une lourdeur et d’une lenteur fatalement suicidaire, mais quelques passages acoustiques viennent alléger des compositions superbement inspirées. Illusion’s Play est un nouvel hymne à la tristesse.
La musique demeure profonde et rêveuse. L’apogée est atteint grâce aux multiples vocaux : il règne un chant d’outre-tombe magistral, un chant clair masculin de toute beauté et une voix féminine angélique qui transporte l’auditeur vers l’au-delà. Une atmosphère particulière se dégage également grâce à l’utilisation très fine mais omniprésente des claviers. SHAPE OF DISPAIR adore étirer au maximum ses morceaux sans être pour autant répétitif, le terme à utiliser est : hypnotique. Bien que les morceaux aient un rythme légèrement plus rapide que sur les précédents opus du groupe, le tempo reste désespérément lent, le groupe préfère jouer sur la puissance et la lourdeur des guitares : un travail phénoménal a été fait sur la qualité du son. Car les riffs, aussi peu nombreux soient-ils, sont une vraie jouissance tant ils sont rares.
Les morceaux s’enchaînent, « Still-motion » et ses 16 minutes d’une beauté mélancolique ultime, puis «Entwined in Misery » absolument fabuleux… si bien que l’on se dit que 61 min ce n’est pas assez ! Pourtant les riffs se répètent et se répètent encore, ils s'allient aux claviers pour entamer une longue marche extrême. Ces rythmes affreusement lents sont de plus en plus entraînants pour devenir envoûtants. Le double chant clair masculin/féminin, placé ici pour contribuer à aérer les mélodies est du plus bel effet. Tous les instruments sont en osmoses pour rechercher un espoir impossible, une lumière occulte. Le Funeral Doom de SHAPE OF DISPAIR est tout simplement majestueux.
