TORTURE KILLER n’est vraiment pas un groupe comme les autres. Tout commence par une bande de musiciens, fans de SIX FEET UNDER et OBITUARY notamment, qui jouent du Death pour s’amuser. Puis les choses prennent forme, et un premier album voit le jour en 2003, for Maggots To Devour. L’appellation « Torture Killer » trouvant son origine dans une chanson du même nom de SIX FEET UNDER, son frontman Chris Barnes (également ancien chanteur de CANNIBAL CORPSE) vient voir de quoi il retourne, et s’engage aux côté de la jeune formation (rien que ça !). Soit le hurleur bien connu s’ennuie, soit TORTURE KILLER est vraiment bon…
En effet ce Swarm est excellent ! Déjà le premier opus du groupe offrait un Death de très grande qualité, énergique et imposant. Les finlandais proposent une musique proche de SIX FEET UNDER, mêlant des influences purement old school à des riffs plus actuels. Le résultat est un marteau pilon qui écrase tout sur son passage. Le tout est servi par un son sans défaut, très agressif mais d’une précision chirurgicale. De quoi anéantir nos cerveaux ! L’arrivée de Barnes s’est traduite par des vocaux bien meilleurs, plus variés et mieux posés sur les instruments. Le chant est en adéquation avec la musique, et participe pleinement à la puissance des compositions. Toutefois rien de franchement original n’est à remarquer… Le groupe privilégie les accords de guitare bien lourds, qui apportent bien plus d’intensité que les rythmiques sur une corde caractéristiques du Death Old School. Ce genre de riffs se retrouve par exemple sur Order Of The Leech de NAPALM DEATH, leur efficacité n’est plus à prouver !
La petite touche en plus de cet album est la présence de quelques mélodies très Goth dans l’âme. Au détour d’un mur sonore qui s’effondre sur nos têtes, une phrase instrumentale lancinante vient apporter son lot de tristesse et de repos mortuaire au milieu du chaos. Dommage que cette charmante attention de la part des finlandais s’éteigne dès « Multiple Counts Of Murder », le reste des titres parait bien linéaire, même si les compositions gardent leur puissance Death intacte !
TORTURE KILLER n’existe que depuis quelques années et s’est déjà hissé à la hauteur des grands en terme de composition et de maîtrise de l’énergie du Metal. Swarm s’écoute d’une seule traite, la voix surpuissante de Barnes et les guitares ravageuses nous malmènent sans relâche tout à long de l’album. Alors détachez vos cheveux, enfilez votre treillis et préparez vous pour la tempête !
