Pour conjurer le mauvais sort qui semble s’acharner à priver AXXIS de toute reconnaissance, les Allemands ont décidé d’enrichir leur style de manière drastique. Le résultat est tellement réussi que l’on se demande pourquoi il n’y on pas pensé plus tôt !
Au Heavy Metal mélodique que le groupe pratiquait dernièrement et qui n’était pas dépourvu de qualités, il a ajouté des arrangements extrêmement bien ficelés, jumelés à une production ahurissante. Au final, on a un Heavy presque symphonique avec l’ajout d’orchestrations, de chant féminin et de chœurs stupéfiants. Tous ces apports sont présents sur la quasi totalité de l’album et imprègnent l’ensemble des compositions. On s’étonne d’ailleurs à de nombreuses reprises que les arrangements soient si bien ficelés, car ils semblent coller naturellement aux compos, les complétant sans les noyer. Et les compos, justement, valent le détour : tout commence avec le Grand Guignol du single “Dance With The Dead”, parodie de musique de film d’horreur. Et cela se poursuit avec de véritables perles : le Speed “Tales Of Glory Island” qui renoue avec la tradition du Power Metal mélodique à l’allemande ou l’excellent “Lady Moon” dont le refrain FM vous collera au cerveau comme une tumeur.
“Stay By Me” a également le potentiel d’un single, mais sa mélodie vraiment évidente ne m’a pas convaincu, elle me fait trop penser à la mauvaise période de SCORPIONS.
AXXIS réussit aussi l’exercice qui consiste à introduire du chant féminin. A cet égard la participation de la chanteuse Lakonia sur plusieurs titres est une idée remarquable qui, là encore, propulse l’ensemble. Il suffit d’écouter “Take My Hand” et l’alternance de chant sur fond d’orchestre pour se convaincre que l’entreprise est réussie.
Bien que l’on retrouve certaines ressemblances avec GAMMA RAY (on ne se refait pas), AXXIS emprunte aussi son côté festif à EDGUY et peut - par le biais des claviers – faire penser à ROYAL HUNT. Pourtant, bien que ces influences soient assez criantes et que l’originalité ne soit pas au rendez-vous, les arrangements (encore eux), donnent à Paradise In Flames une telle identité qu’il serait injuste de le cacher derrière les albums de groupes plus connus.
