Peu de groupes progressifs ont survécu à la vague Punk des années 70-80. Par mis les « survivor », on compte entre autres IQ, PENDRAGON et PALLAS. Cette catégorie de résistants fut nommée « Néo Prog », succédant aux classiques comme YES ou GENESIS. Ainsi, ils continuèrent le combat, perpétuant la tradition… Noble cause dirons-nous. Décor enfin planté, nous pouvons parler musique.
Cliché. C’est le premier mot qui me vient à l’esprit à l’écoute de ce The Dreams Of Men. Ce dernier joui d’une production frappante de qualité. Mais la musique, elle, est restée figée dans le passé à mon goût… Bien sûr qu’il ne faut pas délaisser ce qui a été fait par le passé, mais il faut aussi savoir s’en détacher, savoir évoluer… Et je ne trouve pas que ce soit le cas ici. On sent quand même que l’opus est vraiment travaillé, que les musiciens n’ont pas pris leur temps pour rien (4 ans tout de même). Les enchaînements, break rythmiques etc., sont vraiment réfléchis mais la sauce ne prend pas à mon goût. Et lorsque la voix ultra kitsch tout droit sortie des années 80 entre en scène, c’est encore pire… Evidemment, là c’est une question de goût, certains aimeront sûrement, mais il faut reconnaître qu’au niveau originalité et nouveauté, c’est assez pauvre… Cependant, on retiendra particulièrement les passages instrumentaux d’une grande beauté (intro de « Bringer Of Dreams », « Nothern Star ») qui sont pour moi LE point fort de l’album. Par ailleurs, je ne peux que constater la maîtrise technique des guitaristes avec des solos efficaces, même si peu innovants.
Pour conclure, je suis certain que les abonnés du genre ne seront pas déçus, et même qu’ils aimeront. Pour les autres, il n’est pas nécessaire de s’y arrêter à mon humble avis.
