SYSTEM OF A DOWN peut aisément prétendre avoir bâtit sa notoriété sur une créativité débridée. Ce nouvel opus confirme que le groupe se moque des schémas pré-établis et du conformisme ; il suit son chemin et peu importe qu’on le suive ou non.
Hypnotize est conforme à nos attentes dans la mesure où il foisonne toujours d’influences diverses donnant à l’ensemble un sentiment de grande variété et une ouverture d’esprit proprement hallucinante. Nous enchaînons donc les blast-beats, les douces mélodies entrecoupées de hurlements, en passant par le Thrash et la Pop, sans oublier quelques influences de musique arménienne ! Un beau bordel ! Pourtant, ce mélange qui pouvait s’avérer totalement indigeste, prend forme de façon surprenante. Il faut dire qu’il y a du talent et une bonne dose d’humour.
Mais Tankian et Malankian ne sont pas les clowns de service, ils nous offrent beaucoup d’émotions ; qu’il s’agisse d’une certaine mélancolie ou bien d’un déferlement de violence (“Attack”, par exemple).
Pourtant, bien que ce cocktail délicat soit encore très réussi, on note une petite baisse de régime. Certains titres n’offrent pas un grand intérêt. C’est le cas de la ballade “Lonely Day” qui souffre d’une construction très classique et prévisible. Par ailleurs, le single “Hypnotize” ne m’a pas beaucoup convaincu ; il ne rend pas justice à l’univers créatif du groupe. On trouve aussi quelques répétitions. De manière générale, Hypnotize m’a semblé inférieur en qualité et en intérêt à son prédécesseur.
Avoir quelques faiblesses sur un albums n’est pas anormal, sauf qu’ici le contexte n’invite pas à l’indulgence. Car, chacun le sait, cet album est le jumeau de Mezmerize ; il a été conçu en même temps. Or, on s’en doutait, ces deux albums auraient très bien pu n’en faire qu’un seul. Les quelques petits défauts auraient été écartés, faute de place ; on aurait alors un album énorme, proche du chef d’œuvre. Au lieu de cela, on a 2 bons albums avec quelques faiblesses. Ce n’est pas si mal, sauf qu’il aura fallu que les fans sortent 2 fois leur portefeuille pour s’offrir seulement 75 minutes de musique (et encore, il faut exclure “Soldier Side”). N’est-ce pas ironique de la part d’un groupe qui se moque de la société de consommation ?
