5 ans après le dernier album studio And Then, You'll Beg et quelques changements de line-up, CRYPTOPSY fait son retour avec ce concept album: Once Was Not.
Pour l'occasion, le groupe renoue avec son ancien et quelque peu controversé vocaliste: Lord Worm. Pour beaucoup, il est le symbole d'une époque plus brutale et directe, et donc porteur de l'espoir d'un retour aux sources, en tous les cas de l'abandon de l'aspect "core" qu'apportait Di Salvo. Ceux là ne seront pas tout à fait déçus.
L'album débute par quelques rasgueados de guitare classique pour plonger rapidement dans l'Intensité propre au groupe.
Un magma froid et mécanique. Puissant. Voila ce qui vient à l’idée en écoutant Once Was Not.
Flo Mounier assène en martelage effréné. Impressionnant. Inhumain. Il se pose définitivement comme l’un des batteurs les plus rapides, techniques et créatifs du style. Chaque partie semble parfaite et logique. Blasts, gravity blasts impressionnants, variations de rythmes, de tempos, contre temps. Toute sa palette est exploitée à la perfection, gravant les rythmes dans le granite. Les riffs sont très "amélodiques", sans être dissonants pour autant, ce qui déroute forcément certains. Et c’est l’une des critiques que je ferais au groupe. Le groove et la lourdeur qui percutaient l’auditeur sur None so Vile ont quelque peu disparu, laissant place à, selon moi, une absence de réelle atmosphère portée par la structure mélodique du groupe (en conservant à l’esprit que l’absence d’atmosphère peut déjà être une atmosphère). Seuls les quelques passages mélodiques qui ponctuent l’album restent vraiment à l’oreille, et c’est assez significatif. Les soli sont alors magnifiques, d’inspiration néoclassique en conservant la touche CRYPTOPSY et aèrent l’ensemble de façon magistrale. Bien plus que les quelques samples qui, si ils sont souvent employés à bon escient (quelques discours, notamment en français et allemand, quelques effets technoïdes réussis, quelques nappes de synthés) coupent parfois les chansons.
Jusqu'à présent, Once Was Not est un très bon album de Death brutal, assez conforme dans l’esprit aux dernières productions du groupe. Mais là où le bat blesse vraiment, c’est que CRYPTOPSY n’est pas un groupe instrumental. Je fais partie de ceux qui pensent que Lord Worm n’a jamais été un bon vocaliste, et que Di Salvo ne correspondait pas du tout à ce que je voulais entendre du groupe. Mais là, il faut presque faire l’effort de ne pas prendre en compte ses gargouillis de pachyderme asthmatique sous laxatif pour apprécier le disque. Il n’y a aucune attaque, pas de puissance, pas de souffle. Il excelle dans les cris déchirés mais ce n’est pas suffisant pour rattraper cette performance, surtout sur un concept album où, on l’imagine, les paroles doivent avoir leur importance. Concept qui entre parenthèse m’est tout à fait étranger puisque le disque promo est exempt de toutes paroles comme d’explications !
Je rassure le lectorat, il est tout a fait possible d’apprécier Once Was Not sans se laisser distraire par les vocaux, somme toute assez peu présents. Et cela serait dommage, car le disque vaut la peine de s’y plonger. Il m’est juste regrettable que CRYPTOPSY n’ait jamais réussi à trouver (ou conserver) le chanteur qu’il méritait.
