Pour ce 5ème album les New Yorkais n’ont pas abandonné leur fameux Surf Punk’n’Roll ! Par ce terme barbare, il faut comprendre : un Punk à l’anglaise, old school bien sûr, teinté de Rock, et ayant subit un lifting destiné à rendre l’album séduisant auprès des plus jeunes. Mais qu’on ne s’alarme pas de cette tentative de rajeunissement, car elle demeure discrète et le ton Punk – bien que pas vraiment extrême – reste prédominant. On trouve donc la base musicale propre à ce style revendicatif : une guitare nerveuse qui balance des riffs crus, une batterie rapide et plutôt saccadée, une basse omniprésente, ainsi qu’un chant assez hargneux. C’est sur ce dernier point que le Punk s’efface davantage, Kevin Cole ayant des accents plus Rock qui apportent une sérieuse nuance ; il faut écouter les refrains mainstream de “1-800”, “Looking For Troubles” ou “Real Rain”.
La production va dans le sens de la sincérité, c’est-à-dire pas d’artifice superflu ; elle colle au genre sans pour autant nous cracher des grésillements au visage.
On y trouve beaucoup d’humour, notamment dans les paroles de “1-800 (Eat Shit)” ou sur l’intro de “Fistfull Of Fury” détournée des musiques de Western de Ennio Morricone !
Trop Rock pour les amateurs de Punk et trop Punk pour les amateurs de Rock, Avenue X risque d’avoir autant de mal à trouver son public que ses prédécesseurs. On peut toutefois le recommander à ceux qui n’oseraient pas franchir le pas vers le Punk mais qui sont curieux de savoir à quoi ça peut ressembler.
