RESURRECTURIS (it) - Carlo Strappa (Nov-2015/VF-EV)

Line-up
: Enrico Tiberi (chant), Carlo Strappa (guitare), Luca Favoni (guitare), Angelo De Santi (batterie), Manuel Coccia (basse)

Discographie : Nocturnal (Diamond Records - 1998), Nocturnal Corpses (Forever) (Backwoods Productions - 1999), Corpses Forever (Backwoods Productions - 1999), The Cuckoo Clocks Of Hell (Independant - 2003), Non Voglio Morire (Copro Records - 2009), Nazienda (Mighty Music - 2015)

Metal-Impact. Bonjour Carlo comment vas-tu ?

The Cuckoo Clocks Of Hell, notre deuxième album.

MI.

Mon groupe italien préféré sera toujours NEGAZIONE. Ils sont inégalables.

MI.
Carlo.

==================== ENGLISH VERSION ====================

Metal-Impact. Hi how are you guys? Feel free to introduce yourselves personally and artistically in your own words, and tell us more about the past and present of RESURRECTURIS.
Carlo Strappa. RESURRECTURIS come from a long way. The band actually started in 1990. At that point I had already been active as fanzine editor/writer for approximately 5 years (Lethal Metal Zine), so I was a known presence in the scene.
I got into extreme metal by the time METALLICA released "Ride The Lightning" and I was overenthusiastic about everything fast, noisy and edgy (Thrash Metal, Hardcore, Black Metal), so I started corresponding with like minded souls from all over the world, since I felt totally isolated in the depth of the Italian province.
It took me ages to find somebody who wanted to play this weird noise that I was into, but at very long last RESURRECTURIS finally began. We were among the very first Italian Death Metal bands together with NECROMASS, MORTUARY DRAPE, etc. And we were playing a chaotic breed of grinding Death metal.
25 years later RESURRECTURIS are still doing music, with me being the only member from the original line-up. Over the course of this quarter of a century we've changed quite considerably. It's just a natural process. You make new experiences, learn new things and all this reflects in the things that you do and in your vision. But I still see a certain coherence that links our latest stuff to early recordings.

MI. Your amazing new album Nazienda just came out, try to explain its' conception and recording process. Tell us more about the lyrics, the musical direction, some fun facts, everything you need to say actually. And don't forget the artwork!
Carlo. Thank you very much for your nice words. I am flattered...
I had this idea to represent how it is today to have a working position in a multinational corporation or a mid-sized company. You know, you have a good job that gives you financial stability and all your material problems are solved, so you should be happy and everything. Still my personal experience told me that there is something more beneath the facade.
I wanted to do a thorough, detailed depiction of what I saw around me and did not want to use shortcuts or simplifications. So I chose to create this frame of the hours of the day and started imagining the single episodes in a way that they could resonate with other people's experiences and thoughts.
I think that this serious approach makes Nazienda quite a unique album in the contemporary music scene. Today a band has to keep a steady output otherwise it will be quickly forgotten. We actually devoted 5 years to this project, writing and rewriting every single riff and lyric line, in order to achieve a result that was as much adherent to the concept that we had in mind. This is unthinkable and suicidal by today's industry standards, but it had to be done like this. And we had no other concern, than to create the album that we wanted.
It was more like producing a movie than recording music. When Enrico was laying down his vocal lines, I was not telling him, "make it sound more like Chris Barnes" or stuff like that. It was more "imagine you're in a meeting with all your directors and the situation is extremely tense - how would you want to scream in their face if you could?". You see? Years after method acting, we've invented method singing, ha ha ha! We had an incredible moment when we did the vocals of "Col-League-s". For this song we wanted to have the actual voices of real office workers, so we summoned some friends and acquaintances and had them screaming their guts out. None of them is a proper musician, but I think that their spontaneity gave soul to the song.
For the artwork we went to our great friend and talented artist, Daniele Cudini, who already did the cover of "The Cuckoo Clocks Of Hell", our second album. He opened his archive to us and helped us select paintings that could represent each moment of the day, the way we imagined it. The artwork ended up being a masterpiece in itself. I only wish we can do a vinyl version of Nazienda soon, because that would really do justice to these wonderful images.

MI. It's a concept album in itself. Was it a natural direction, something you really wanted to do, or did the whole project grow during the composition?
Carlo. Having reached the venerable age of 44 I want to do things that are meaningful to me. I do not have much spare time, so I want to devote it to creating beautiful things that I will be 100 percent happy with. So when we started laying down the riffs for the album, the overall picture had already been there for some time. Of course working on it, we did changes and certain things developed in directions that we did not even imagine in the first place. But generally speaking, it was all on paper even before the first note was written.

MI. It took several years to release it. What happened since Non Voglio Morire? Were you abducted or something like that?
Carlo. Non Voglio Morire (I don't want to die) was released back in 2009. The album came out on Copro (UK) who did not pay any attention to it. They put it out and quickly forgot about it. I did a very hard work at promoting the album on websites, mags and so on and we got a decent exposure. Unfortunately by the time we started receiving offers for gigs and tours, the relationship between me and Janos (former vocalist/guitarist) had soured to the point that he had been fired from the band. So we could not reap the fruits of the work we had done. It took some time to find a new guitarist and a new singer and then we set on to work on Nazienda.

MI. The concept of this new album deals with the boring routine of an everyday life that clearly does not fulfil our dreams and goals. As musicians, you certainly have an external look on this, is this your inner view of an every day hell, or just an objective piece of thought of nowadays society that grinds individual creativity?
Carlo. Being a person that has dedicated countless hours to music, literature and art in general I surely developed this creative aspect more than your average Joe. But I think that you don't have to be an artist to perceive the negative impact of contemporary approach to "human resources" on your personal life. Not only on your creativity but on your humanity.
As an artist I think I can have the abilities to describe it and offer this vision to others.

MI. By the way, what does a normal RESURRECTURIS day look like?
Carlo. When we are together it's quite nice. We are very different from one another, but we get along pretty well. Our personal lives are very different. Some are full time musicians, some have more ordinary works. We all place music very high in our scale of values.

MI. The titles refer to some precise hours of the day, and each of them got a particular mood, that fits perfectly to the theme, and that's what stroke me when I listened to your album. I somehow recognize my former life though your songs, but how did you manage to keep so close to the reality? Did the music come first and then you linked it to an hour of the day, or did you work in reverse?
Carlo. All these sub-genres in metal music, I do not really see them as "genres", but rather like musical registers that I can use to represent different emotions and situations. So if I want to describe a moment that is meditative and intimate, I will use a Doomy approach, whereas if I need to describe the buzz of the alarm clock waking you, I'll go for the throat and use dissonances and Mathcore. It's very challenging because you do not stick to a formula that you repeat all the time. You have to reinvent all the time. But it keeps things interesting.

MI. You seem to drift slowly from your initial sound to a more specific kind of music. Do you still feel related to the Death Metal scene? How would you describe your music to someone that never heard a single note from you? And by the way, what's your opinion over the Neo Death scene of the 21st century? Still bands that entertain you?
Carlo. Last week I went to see CARCASS, NAPALM DEATH, OBITUARY and VOIVOD in Bologna and enjoyed it enormously. So of course I'm still well connected to my musical roots. But today I could not write the same stuff I did 20 years ago. It was great then, but it would be lame today.
Describing our music is very difficult to me, I'm too involved. Recurring tags in Nazienda reviews has been, progressive extreme metal or hybrid metal. But I don't know if I like them. I never liked progressive rock. I found it was more about technique than feeling. I always based my tastes in music on my gut reaction to it.
There are many killer bands out there nowadays. Some time ago I was in Denmark and I saw this UK band, PALM READER, that I liked. Probably there has never been so much great music around as there is today. I only don't have as much time as I used to. Maybe not many are as original as those founding fathers that we had in mid eighties, but we really cannot complain. If I am to quote a band that I always like to listen to in recent times, I'd say THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN.

MI. The Italian Metal scene seems to have faded out onto something completely new these last years. Experimental, Jazzcore, Avant-Garde Post Hardcore, do you agree with that? What's on with the local scene that now looks like the epicenter of European creativity? Do you know some bands that really need a focus on?
Carlo. Yes, we have an incredible scene here in Italy. Some names? Bologna Violenta (our former drummer Alessandro, who did Nazienda and Non Voglio Morire recently joined them), THE SECRET, ZEUS, CUT and countless more.
My all time Italian fave, is undoubtely NEGAZIONE. They were unmatchable.

MI. I'm sure there will be a tour to support this last album. Can you tell us more about it? Some headlining? Supporting?
Carlo. We're still looking for the right opportunity to surface. We are getting some offers but we are still working on it. We really like to support bigger bands, we've had excellent experiences in the past with IMPALED NAZARENE, VITAL REMAINS, MACABRE. Unfortunately 95 percent of these opportunities are buy-ins and the state of our finances now is not ideal for such investments. So we'll have to opt for other formulas.

MI. Europe is facing a huge financial and human crisis, and Italy has been stricken badly, just like Spain & Greece. What do you think about the attitude of our political leaders, especially Germany, and do you feel that a relief can happen? How?
Carlo. The economic situation in Italy is slowly improving after 5 or 6 years of social disasters. I am disenchanted about the abilities of our leaders to deal with today's challenges on finance, society, terrorism. On the other hand, the leaders we have are the expression of the society that we are: selfish, greedy, narrow-minded, hedonist. There's a lot of good people out there but not many are willing to sacrifice their time and efforts to contribute to the improvement of general well being.

MI. The music industry has changed a lot since the early 00's. Sales are constantly slumping, the CD is almost dead, and vinyl seems to hit the spot once again. What's the future of a band in this whole mess? Is the DIY business the only solution? What's your position over all these facts?
Carlo. Steve Albini had a speech at the Face The Music conference in 2014 on these topics. I advise anybody who misses the good-old-days to check it out ( https://youtu.be/Lz_CPzuwSk4 ).
DIY "Do It Yourself" is evolving into a next stage: "Decide It Yourself". Today a band has all the options in their face: if they want a manager because they don't feel they can manage the band properly themselves, they can easily find many (some of whom could also be decent people, hehe). They want a label or they want to self produce or anything in between? All these possibilities exist and are at hand.
When I compare today to the mid eighties when my endeavours in music began, I cannot help thinking how easier would have all been if I had all these tools then. Of course this opens to much more competition and all the difficulties of a potentially worldwide arena. But contemporary musicians are empowered in a way like they never were.
But make no mistakes: this only means that to become successful you have to pour as much effort as you had before, the only difference now is that if you do so, you have the possibility to reach a much wider audience.

MI. Carlo, you used to write in a fanzine many years ago. What's your look upon the underground press nowadays, especially the webzines. Do you think they're still reliable? Is the faith still alive?
Carlo. It's a bit awkward: zines as they used to be are a thing of the past. Today we have blogs and portals which carry on the flame and they do a great job at this. The pace has increased enormously, so the life span of an album or an EP is very short. The international scene is dominated by a handful of sites that are big and well structured (Blabbermouth, Pitchfork, Metal-injection, Metalsucks), then locally, each country has 3-4 main websites and hundreds of smaller blogs etc. All websites are literally flooded with digital promos that they have to review. In such a crowded and hectic space there's not too much space for the development of personal connection and that is what made the difference for bands and zines in the past. Just think of Mayhem and Slayer Mag.! Anyway once in a while you will be able to really connect to somebody and see this relationship blossom and hopefully lead to mutual growth, both on a personal level and "career"-wise.

MI. Some words you'd like to say to your fans and the readers of Metal-Impact? And try to convince them to buy your album by any means possible!
Carlo. We put a lot of effort into Nazienda and we're damn sure it deserves at least a couple of listens. We'd be flattered to see it selling out the first print run (and hopefully the second and the third), this would enable to do more things and tour under better conditions.
Nazienda can be downloaded from our official website (and also from many pirate blogs) or can be streamed.
Give it a chance and you will not regret it!

MI. The last word is for you, feel free to say whatever you want!
Carlo. Carlo : Well, I want to thank you, for your support and belief in our album. It really means something to us when we see that somebody out there really gets it and likes us!
We were surprised to see that in France Nazienda was received very well, I'd say better than in other places. So we're thinking maybe we should organize a mini tour there. We'll see... Some days ago I read a review of Nazienda on German Rock Hard, where they more or less said: they are skilled and have their own sound and everything, but life is already so hard... This made me think quite a lot: I mean this is extreme metal, not Beyoncé, so why anybody should complain about the thickness and conceptual complexity of our album is escaping me. Probably they think metal should be only about women, Satan and beer. I thought this was something that we had surpassed once and for all with METALLICA's Master of Puppets. Your review on the other hand was quite the opposite. You immersed yourself in the complexity of our work and found enjoyment in it. For this we are grateful!
Vive la France...
