Erik Danielsson. Oui, 4 mois !

Erik. Merci.

==================== ENGLISH VERSION ====================

Metal-Impact. Dear Erik, such a big pleasure to have you here! I heard the process of the new album The Wild Hunt took 4 months! How you feel now, being here in Hellfest, after this long period of recording?
Erik Danielsson. Yes, 4 month ! And that's a very long time. For me it's so nice, firstable to get away from home and talk about the album instead of struggling with recording you know. It's a very good feeling. You know it's always weird when you record a new album, it's a very painful process all the time. It's like giving birth. So it's feels very good now when I started to realize that we really make it.

MI. The last album Lawless Darkness had such great feedback! Was it hard to start working on new one?
Erik. We try not to think so much about that. Because for me, writing music and working with our band is something that happen within very close to wall. WATAIN is really our world and it's our life and whatever we do in studio or in rehearsal room, that's so far away from the press or the fans expectation and that's something that happens in the heart. The pressure is always from the inside, not only from the outside you know.

MI. Nowadays, you have to be engage to the business part of music to be able to be heard! In other bands, Black Metal music is based on pure underground atmosphere without being limited in kind of label stuff or these business part! How you feel about that?
Erik. We express our pure feelings in the album and in live shows and that is really a part that is important to me. That is something that we can do without anyone coming and trying to do something. The rest is about that kind of worldly things that you have to deal with it. And I like it, I like talking about the album cause it means so much to me. And I never really had a problem with that. You know, the other guys are really different and they don't like to meet people, they don't like to talk to press so much. I respect that but for me it's never really been a problem. It’s something that if you don't know how to do that or at least one person in the band who could be able to do that, you're fucked.

MI. Can you tell us more about the new album, The Wild Hunt?
Erik. The first thing that most people say is that it's a very very different album from what we've done in the past. I can’t see why. We have taken in quite a lot of new ideas. But at the same time, it's such a honest album. It's really us, cutting open our chest, ripping out the heart and put it on the table. And for me that's what it is. And for us it's always hard to compare album to album because each album represent different things. Every album have it's story on it's own. And a new chapter is completely different than the old chapter. You know, it's kind of thing that is more up to other people say how it sounds compare to the last one. We do what we do and it's kind of personal thing to talk about really.

MI. I mean for me it's the logic of WATAIN. I mean you guys always wanted to pass the limit of your creation! Each album are different!
Erik. I'm so glad that you tell that. WATAIN is my life and it's what I was doing when I was 16 years old. For 15 years now you know. And it's impossible and totally uninspiring to us to do the same things over and over again. For me it's a journey you know, it's really The Wild Hunt and that's what we have been doing you know. You always reach new places. You always have new experiences and it has to translate into what you do as an artist and that's what keeps that important that it always go on and on and on and there is always new things.

MI. Could you explain more about the process of producing this new album?
Erik. This time we decided that we gonna be in studio for 4 month. We felt that we were ready and that takes 4 month to record and that's a very long time. So what we decided to do was that we were going to use 4 different places for recording. All of them were outside of cities like far away from everything. Because we needed to be detached from the world. We wanted to be completely by ourselves. But it was really like living in a monastery. I like working that way because it becomes after a while very spiritual experience you know. When you focus on the same thing everyday, and you are really close to people who are like your brothers, it becomes almost kind of hypnotic experience after a while. And with nothings around and you are just in the middle of nothing. It's very inspiring process but it's also very painful process at the same time. Like opening our bones and suffering, really. For WATAIN that's the way or WATAIN should be done. And I think you can hear that on the album like it was not recorded on a studio in a city. It was an adventure and I hope it can be also heard in the album.

MI. You guys prefer to tour with other Black Metal bands or with bands who are different than you?
Erik. You know, we have always made a pretty big point to not always touring with other Black Metal bands. Because I think that when you go to concert with WATAIN, what we do on stage is… You know, if they would be a band like MARDUK, I think it's to much when you have two Black Metal bands on the same night, for me personally. I've always think it's more interesting to tour with bands that are different. We toured with CELTIC FROST which I think, it was the perfect band for us to tour with. And now we are hoping to do the tour with a band called INSOLITUDE from Sweden. INSOLITUDE used to be more like a classic Heavy Metal band but now they are moving in a direction that I don't even know how to explain it. Really dark and dangerous band that I think people would be chock they see them live. So I really like it. I like to tour with bands that are very dark and dangerous but not necessarily Black Metal bands.

MI. I just heard about you guys touring with KREATOR and CELTIC FROST.
Erik. Yeah, it was interesting. I mean, I love the old KREATOR. For us it was pretty much touring with CELTIC FROST in the first place you know. KREATOR was great cause they still have the energies and that old metal power that WATAIN is also very much about. But specially CELTIC FROST on that tour, they invited to us to come on the tour and it was just perfect. The best tour that we've had ever done was with DISSECTION which was in 2004 and it can not get more special than that for us.

MI. How you choose your setlist?
Erik. We always want of course the audience to be apart of what we do. We want to create a wild atmosphere and of course, we keep that in mind when we chose our setlist how to be. We see how people react to certain songs. We always try to make the setlist night by night. How we feel, and how the audience seems and what kind of place it is. Hellfest is a different festival because when we play, we have a big crowed and maybe 20 percent of that are Black metallers, the rest are people who come to have a great experience. So it's just about going on the stage and see what happens.

MI. WATAIN became a big influence for so many people who are into Black Metal. Do you have any message for them?
Erik. You know, what we do with WATAIN is something that happens in the world of WATAIN. We know the ingredient, we know what we are doing and for us is the most important thing that we can ever be apart of. But then, we put it on the table for people to relate to in anyway that they want. WATAIN is a very powerful thing, it's a very strong concept. But it's not something that you can force upon someone else you know. WATAIN is very much about one thing. It's about freedom and liberating your spirit. Breaking free off the chains. I don't think that we can make people do that, but I think that WATAIN can be a step in that direction. Maybe we can wake people up a little bit and make them go in that direction. If we can do that, great, and I would be proud of that but it's never gonna be our gain. Our gain is to do that for ourselves and to liberate ourselves and become free.

MI. What WATAIN planned for the future?
Erik. You know, for me, we built WATAIN in order to shut out the rest of the world. And to have our own place where we could be free and we can make our fire grow and create our own rules and live our lives according to our own rules. And the plane is to making stronger and stronger this world. To make it more and more firing and powerful. The way I see WATAIN is like a fire and the more wood that we put on this fire, the greater that fire become. And love seeing that fire growing and it gives me a reason to live you know. Cause to me, life in general is not something that I value much. You know, I think death is much more interesting than life really. But WATAIN for me is the thing that makes my life worth living and it's the only reason that I'm still here you know.

MI. Thank you so much for the interview. Best wishes for WATAIN.
Erik. Thank you.
