Line-up
: Andi Deris (chant), Michael Weikath (guitare), Markus Grosskopf (basse), Sascha Gerstner (guitare), Daniel Löble (batterie)

(Single – 1998), I can (Single – 1998), Better than Raw (Album - 1998), Lay All your Love on Me (Single - 1999), Metal Jukebox (Album – 1999), Mr Torture (Single – 2000), If I could Fly (Single – 2000), The Dark Ride (Album - 2000), Just a little sign (Single – 2003), Rabbits don't come easy (Album - 2003), Mrs God (Single – 2005), Keeper of the Seven Keys – the legacy (Album - 2005), Live in Sao Polo (Live – 2007), Gambling with the Devil (Album – 2007), Unarmed (Best of 25th anniversary - 2010), 7 Sinners (Album – 2010), Straight out of Hell (Album – 2013)

Metal-Impact. Avant toute chose, j'aimerais qu'on parle du titre – "Keeper of the Seven Keys the legacy".
Michael. Ca ne me pose aucun problème!
MI. Que les gens arrêtent de ne faire référence qu'aux 2 albums "Keeper of the Seven Keys"?...
Michael. Oui tout à fait.

MI.

MI.

Michael. J'ai écrit Born on Judgment Day, Do you know what you're fighting 4, Get it Up, et aussi King for a 1000 years, qui est une production de groupe, tout le monde y a contribué.

MI. Qu'est-ce qui t'inspire pour écrire ?
Michael.

MI. J'aimerais que tu me parles un peu de la chanson "King for a 1000 years" et surtout de ce qu'elle raconte, car elle est visiblement lié au morceau "Keeper of the Seven Keys"...
Michael. Pourquoi laisse-t-on faire ?
MI.

Michael.

Michael.

==================== ENGLISH VERSION ====================

We don't need to introduce HELLOWEEN any more, the famous german metal band!
Since the release of their hit albums "Keeper of the Seven Keys – Part 1&2", the band didn't manage to produce another album with such a great impact than those 2 albums. There has been many very good albums, some of them having nothing to be ashamed of in comparison with the 2 "Keeper" albums, but none of those managed to get the same cult status.
The many line-up changes probably didn't help (today, there are only 2 members left of the original band) Today, HELLOWEEN is back with a new drummer, and a new album with a very promising title: "Keeper of the Seven Keys – the legacy".
Will they do it, will they manage to recreate the event of the 2 first "Keeper" albums? The answer is on October 31th! In the meantime, I have the chance to interview one of the founding members, Michael Weikath, in order to talk of the concept of this new album. The interview takes place in Weiki's room, and when I enter, I see on the table a CD of Mylène Farmer, a famous French artist. I asked him if the album belongs to him, if he knows this singer, and he explained me that he heard it the day before when arriving in France. He found it quite strange but interesting, so he bought the album...

Metal-Impact. So, we're here mostly to talk about your knew album. First of all, I'd like to talk about the title – "Keeper of the Seven Keys the legacy". I'd like you to explain me the meaning of this title. Of course, the link with the two first "Keeper of the seven keys" is obvious, but does this title mean this album is a return to the beginning, to where you come from, or is it a way to say "this is our new hit album"?
Michael Weikath. It's basically to prove that we can do this as the band we are right now. Since ages, ever since the "Keeper of the Seven Keys", people approached us, like management, record company or fans, you know, and they said "and when will you do another Keeper?" Actually, we thought that "The Time of the Oath" would be the "Keeper 3", and many people refer to it like that as well. But it's strange, somehow, it didn't have the same impact, afterwards people were aware of how good "The Time of the Oath" was, but not necessarily when it happened. So maybe you have to put a label on it, to say ok, you want "Keeper 3", ok you have "Keeper 3". Or, "Keeper of the Seven Keys – the legacy" because if you want to call it "Keeper of the Seven Keys Part III", I would agree that you have to incorporate former band members like Michael Kiske or Kai Hansen into the scene. On the other hand, we wanted to prove that we can do something like this as the band we are now. So if you call it "the legacy", then it's not a lie, it's just plain truth. Because you don't have to rely on someone from the old band members. If we would have done so, people would have said "yes, we love the new record, it's great!" but only because you have the old band members. So that's not much of a big help for us in our situation. We want to step forward, to improve and we want to prove something, and so I think that's what we have done. And then later, you can do whatever you want! You know, if former members want to do recordings together, whatever, you can do that !
MI. Is this something you would agree to do, to record another album with HELLOWEEN's former band members?
Michael. There's no problem! It's just that at this point in time, it's crucial to do it on our own. Otherwise we'll never really be independent. All the band members that we have now have a different value and reality inside the band, and if we couldn't just do a good new HELLOWEEN record... we needed something to break that spell, to break free from all this you know...
MI. That people stop referring only to the 2 albums "Keeper of the Seven Keys"?...
Michael. Yes, exactly.

MI. How did this project take shape? Did you first decide you wanted to call the new album "Keeper of the Seven Keys – the legacy", and then you started to compose songs that would justify this title, or is it only after having composed several songs that you realised the album could be called like that?
Michael. It was a mixture of everything. It was suggested by the record company in Japan, the guy did it more or less like a joke after the tour, because we played the track "Keeper of the Seven Keys", so he said, "oh, maybe you wanna do "Keeper 3" and we said "actually we may", and I said that with a band like this, we could.

MI.Can you tell me a little about the creation process for an album? How do you work in the band to compose the songs?
Michael. Usually everyone comes with his demo, then the demos are being listened to, we all meet and listen to the demos and we pick up the songs that we think are beyond. Sometimes there are only fragments, and you want to add a few more parts, sometimes a track is already finished in a way, then you take it the way it is, or you want to add something, to something that's already finished or not quite complete... So you meet in the rehearsing room, and you try things, and first of all you try to play what's there...
MI. Regarding your label, how does it work? Do you have to submit what you want to do?
Michael. No, no, we can do what we want, we have contracts that say our record companies have to take the productions we do. It's just, you know, for the album title, we kept it open really, because we tried to do our very best and create something worth the name "Keeper", but if it had turned out to be something different, we would also have called the record a different way. So we were not quite sure, it was only at the very end when the track "King for a 1000 years" was created, when it was finished, that we thought, "yeah, this is now really good stuff, we can call it like this".

MI. Daniel Löble is the last one arrived in the band; did he already contribute to the composing of the last album?
Michael. Yes, he played the tracks, he came to the island (Tenerife) to record the album as soon as possible actually.
MI. How did you meet him?
Michael. He was suggested by Charlie Bauerfeind, he knew him from other productions, former bands. He knew he's a very funny, sympathetic character, and also, a super talent on drums. At the same time, he's a very nice guy, he's not arrogant, he doesn't have any mental problem, he's just a very carefree guy and very funny – you have to laugh about him very much, he's a sunny character !

MI. Since we're talking about line-up, you're one of the founding members of HELLOWEEN, and I was wondering, after all these years, and all those line-up changes, how do you feel? Are you happy with the way things have evolved, or are you sad that things didn't work out with the original line-up?
Michael. I'm very happy with how it's running now. Life is life, you've got to stick to it and you've got to live with it, that's the thing. You know, perhaps I would have prefered that the original HELLOWEEN line-up would have been the final one, that nothing bad would have happened, because you know, it's a lot of stress for everyone, a lot of sad things. As it was, the characters in the original HELLOWEEN band didn't match too well, or whatever. There was a certain magic, and it could have been done a better or a different way... But it didn't.
MI. Did you kept in touch with some former members of HELLOWEEN?
Michael. Yeah, you know, we played 2 concerts with Kai Hansen recently. He came to play "How many tears" and "Future World" and we've done that on 2 occasions. The first was at the Ludwigsberg Rockfabric, which is like a famous club there, and then in Wacken. Maybe you'll find some recordings or pictures on the internet...

MI. Lets get back to the album. Can you explain me what does the album cover represent? What does it mean?
Michael. Well it's just a fight between the Keeper and the Devil. The Devil is there as an androgyn person, because we also have "Mrs God". Mrs God is letting everything happening on Earth like war or things like this, people always say "Why is God permitting all this?" and Markus once said "It's clear, it's because God is a woman, and she's doing her make-up, spending more time looking into the mirror than caring about things on Earth... In fact, we all have a free will, so things happening down there on Earth is the fault of Mankind, not God's fault. And so, if you have a "Mrs God", you can also have a kind of She-Devil. A He/She Devil.

MI. I think the sound of this album actually reminds me somehow of the first "Keeper of The Seven Keys", especially regarding the guitar. I felt there are more solos on this album than in the previous ones. I was wondering, how does the writing of a solo works?
Michael. Yeah, write, write... you know, you play it! It says, on this track we need a solo; there's a solo for Sascha, there's a solo for Weiki, and then usually you go and you play something! And when there's something missing you know, we go to the studio and play that. You know, sometimes I sit at home and I add something, a solo that I like, and then I bring it to the studio. I play it to Charlie, and then well we record it, or whatever... that's the way of doing things. Or you have fixed ideas about things, and then you just do it. When the composer of a track has a certain idea of it and then says "ah, can you play something like this?", or there's this solo that has to be played a certain way, according to how the track is constructed...

MI. What songs did you personnally compose on this album?
Michael. I did "Born on Judgment Day", "Do you know what you're fighting 4", "Get it Up", and also "King for a 1000 years", which is a band production, everybody put some input into it.

MI. What inspires you when you write songs?
Michael. Just anything that comes to my mind. If I'm sitting on the bus, or if it's raining, or anything.. Something in the news, some funny works... just events that triggers your fantasy.

MI. On the song "Occasion Avenue", in the introduction we hear samples of several HELLOWEEN's old hits, and there's a strange voice making commentaries like "ah, let's see - what is this?" as if it were disgusted by those old hits... What does it mean?
Michael. It's supposed to be the voice of somebody who likes only the modern stuff, so "Occasion Avenue" is the 2005 version of HELLOWEEN, incorporating new metal riffs a bit more on the modern level, and for instance the other tracks we have, which are more classic. On the record you have about 50% of classic HELLOWEEN, still progressive and everything, but another 50% of a more modern metal. But all together, it gives a really good picture. We had to do that because we have a few many new fans who are happy with the new approach or whatever, and then there are the other kind of fans that, you know, are happy with the traditionnal way of doing things. Also you know if you want to go forward, we had to do it also for people who don't know anything about us, for new fans.

MI. It must be the reason why I love this album. I like the new HELLOWEEN as much as the old HELLOWEEN...
Michael. And if you take what's best in those "modern" people, you can just improve it. You asked "what's inspiring you", well I mean, there are all those new metal bands that I don't like really much, but there's something about what they do that can be quite good, production, or whatever. It triggers ideas in Andi too, because Andi has done "Occasion Avenue".

MI. Since we're talking about new modern metal bands, on "Light the Universe", we can hear a female voice...
Michael. Yes, it's Candice Night from Blackmore's Night.
MI. Yes, and, you correct me if I'm wrong, but until now, we had never heard a female voice on a HELLOWEEN song. Today, there are more and more metal bands that have either a permanent female singer, or that record a few songs in duet with a female singer. So, did you do this to follow the trend?
Michael. No, it's because the demo that Andi had originally done of "Light the Universe" had been recorded with an australian female singer. Markus came up with the idea and said "Why don't we just keep that idea?" because we had only recordings with Andi. So we were thinking, if we can find someone who would be interested, we could do that. And Candice Night, with her group, they happened to be on the same label than us. It's been managed by the same people, so you don't encounter big difficulties, you don't have to go to her, you can ask someone from the label...
MI. And how did it go, working with her?
Michael. Well, she recorded her voice at her studio...
MI. You mean that you've never even met her??
Michael. No, and they sent us a file... But it's just like the guitarist from the Guns'N Roses, Slash, you know, he's playing for Michael Jackson, he had the recording at home and played the solo, and then the data was transferred...
MI. But if you want to play this song live, would Candice sing with Andi?
Michael. No, I think it will only be Andi, because the Blackmore's Night are usually busy with their own tours, they have a very tight schedule as well.
MI. It must be really weird though, to record a song with someone you've never met...
Michael. It'd be nice, you know, if it's a big hit, and it's on every TV or radio station, then you can make an appearance with Candince Night, Mylène Farmer (NDLR: see introduction!) and Andi Deris !! Only in this case, it would be fun!

MI. Now I would like you to tell me a little about the song "King for a 1000 years", and especially about its story, because from what I've understood, it seems to be linked to the track "Keeper of the Seven Keys"...
Michael. It's about the one key of Greed, that's been betrayed by Mankind. Because Humankind went kind of ignorant and they didn't care much, so it happened that somebody revealed the key of greed to the Devil, so the Devil can take that key, and possibly all the other keys that have been saved before in the seas by the Keeper. And so this happens in reality, there's a connection with that fantasy storry. It's taking place right now because we are having raging wars going on. If you take Irak for instance, it was caused by real stupid interests, you know. Somebody was greedy for the oil over there, I don't really think there are proper political reasons behind it. The public in the world lets it happen. That's the same in the song, people should go like "This is impossible, we don't want this to happen, somebody speak up please!" And you hear that story of the Keeper and the Devil, and you say like "Yeah, how can the Keeper lets this happen? It's impossible, why doesn't he get the key? He must be more careful!" And then, you look at the reality, and you see it's happening there too. Why does it happen?
MI. It's always the same story, men are ready to do anything for money…
Michael. Yes, and so it's not just a fantasy thing. It's like everyone's responsible, has to give its opinion, and decide what to do. We think we are living in a democracy, that we are still free and have so much input on everything... but are we really??
MI. So this song is somehow also linked to "Mrs God" alors, since you told me its meaning was something like "It's not God who's responsible for everything that's going on in the world, but each of us."
Michael. Yes, because it's a matter of free will. It's not that God couldn't do everything He or She wants with this world, but we are being rented our free will. It's all a matter of your own conscience, and if people don't have a conscience, many bad things happen.Somebody can be tortured, somebody can be killed, somebody can be violated in any way, because there are some bad people who don't care. There should be other people who should actually protect weaker people, or whatever... there should be a way to get along nice!
MI. Yes… unfortunately, usually there is nobody to protect the weakest people, and most of the time, weaker people are always the first vitcims... Even people who are not really bad have a tendency to take advantage of weaker people in a way or another...
Michael. Yes, and that's so strange, people who want to torture other people, and who take pleasure of this... this is not God's fault, this is the fault of those people!

MI. Back to the album – could you tell me which song is your favorite one?
Michael. No.
MI. You don't want to answer that?
Michael. No, I don't work like this, I can't answer you...
MI. Well, then, maybe you can tell me if there is a song we haven't talked about yet, and that is very important to you, musically or lyrically?
Michael. Well, actually there's the track "Born on Judgement Day". I did it for other people in Brazil. I dedicate this song for all the people in Brazil. This is like, imagine you are being born on Judgement Day, what can you do? The meaning for me behind it is that if people don't watch out what's happening, the Bible is telling you with the story of Revelations about what's happening on Judgement Day: like Earthforces, and armies of Demons and Angels fighting against each other.. This can only take place at the end of the world, I think. People, Mankind, is not interested in forcing the Good. It's the same principle, of being responsible for reality. So if nobody wants to have and ordered and civilised reality any more, this will probably take place, it would be the end of the days.
And so the idea is, there's a newborn baby somewhere on the cliff of a mountain, and he's experiencing the very last days, the Judgement Day... What can you do when you're born on a day like this? There's nothing you can do! And what a waste, isn't it? That baby could have lived a very useful life, but it wasn't given the chance. And I think this is taking place a lot today in Brazil, because there, each time people achieve something, someone comes and says "oh, by the way, economy is very bad, we have to have a refund...".

MI. You're going on tour soon, and you'll play in France in December. I don't know if you may answer me, but I was wondering if you already know what songs you're going to play on stage for this new tour?
Michael. The idea is to play "Halloween", "Keeper of the Seven Keys", "King for a 1000 Years" and "Occasion Avenue", in one part. I mean, that's one version of what we can do. And then on the other half, to play many other tracks that people want to hear – or that we guess the fans want to hear. I don't know where the 4 long tracks will be put into the show, but the basic idea is to play all those long tracks, and then other hits that people want to hear.
MI. This reminds me, on their last tour, Iron Maiden played only their old hits... Like them, you have a pretty long carrier behind you, is it something that HELLOWEEN could do someday?
Michael. But what are the old hits? Where do you want to stop?
MI. Well, IRON MAIDEN chose to play only their 4 first albums...
Michael. Yeah, I don't know... We always play the old hits like "Eagle Fly Free" anyway...
MI. I was also wondering, after this long carrier, which one would be your favorite album, the one you're the most proud at?
Michael. I can't answer that, I don't work like that. No, no, I like everything the same. There are a few things that I don't really like so much...
MI. Which ones?
Michael. No, no !

MI. We were just saying HELLOWEEN had a big carrier, and you were telling me earlier about your new fans... For those new fans who don't know HELLOWEEN and its origins that well, can you remind me a little how the band first got together?
Michael. How the band got together? Well, it was because there were a few bands in Hamburg that did something at that time, and, you know, many bands do music for the fun of it, because they want to do it on the week-end or whatever, and there are people who want to do it a professional way: to do records, to have contracts... I've been one of those people, who wanted to do it professionnally, and so in Hamburg, there weren't so many musicians you could look for who were fit to do that. First of all, you need somebody who can write songs, you need somebody who can play guitar, and you need people with a proper band spirit, with a time to rehearse for something like that. If somebody has a steady job, it's not very likely that this person will be able to work for a band like that, you just have to have a lot of free time, when you come up with all those ideas... I had my first job at the mail order service for records, and I had to have like a hundred and ten thousand album titles in my head! Believe me or not, but all of this is taking a lot of space in your brain, and if you deal with it everyday.. well in the end I was not able to write song lyrics as I used to do, and I didn't have the capacity to do anything else because of my work! So I knew that later on, if I have more time, I could write better lyrics. So there was a group of musicians who tried to set up concerts with a better system, and they kind of managed the whole thing so that more concerts would be organised, they tried to pass on things to record companies, or demo productions... Very complicated, everything, at that time. But there was this band, Iron Fist, that I saw, I've bee, there with my band, we had a concert, we saw the other guys, we got to know each other... Markus is one of the guys that everybody in Hamburg wanted in his band. So basically that's how HELLOWEEN was born.

MI. What is your best memory with the band?
Michael. Oh, I don't know. But naturally we have the Monsters of Rock Festival concert, with like 110 000 people in 87 or 88 (NDLR: HELLOWEEN was there 1988)... There was Deep Purple, Cinderella, David Lee Roth... that were crazy times, we've done all those shows in the USA... It was a very funny tour. But you know, the best moments, it's when for example you go to Djakarta and you play in front of 45 000 people, that's really crazy, it's really hot, and you play in those stadiums, and there are all those people... Actually, only 25 000 tickets were available for sale, and then there were like 25 000 people more who wanted to get in! So they get to the stadium, and naturally got in, because the police force certainly wouldn't stop those 25 000 people! So, it's things like that.

MI. Do you think you will release a new DVD soon?
Michael. Well, it's in the planning. First of all, we did the "Hellish Videos", it's a collection of all the videos we've done. It was out previously as "The pumpkin DVD", but it was available in Japan only. Now we've done the "Hellish Videos" with some outtakes and live scenes. And during the next tour, I suspect that there will be a possible live DVD... It has to be done at some point, when you're secure with what you're doing and really prepared...

MI. As a conclusion, what would you like to say to your French fans?
Michael. I wanna say thanks for the support, you know, this time we're coming here and it looks like the tickets sales for this concert look very good, so it's to be expected that it's gonna be an extraordinary concert. Sometimes we were here, with Master of the Rings for example, and the response was not there at all, because, we played in very small clubs, and there were not that many french fans there. You can easily tell if the French like something or not, because they react a pretty extreme way. So I can only say thanks for what's there, that they come to the show, and are still interested!

After the interview, I asked Michaek to sign something for our website, as we always do, and I told him he could do whatever he wanted – draw, write.... He began to draw this huge pumpkin, as you can see on the picture at the top of the page. I took this opportunity to ask him who usually draws the pumkins on their albums? He answers that he doesn't really know, but he guesses that it's probably the artist that does the coverart. I tell him he could do the pumpkins, because his is quite nice, but he doesn't really seem convinced! Then, he did the HELLOWEEN logo, and wanted the O to look like a boiled egg... He drew a spoon to eat the egg, and so that people understand the drawing better. After that, he decided that some vineggar was needed to go with the egg, (don't ask me why!) so he asked me how to write it in French, and drew a vineggar pot! If we weren't interrupted because the time was over, I wonder what he would have added next !!
