C'est toujours pareil. Quand tu crois enfin qu'tu t'en sors, qu'en y en a plus, bah y en a encore. Une prose qui colle décidemment bien à CHELSEA GRIN, dont les tergiversions coreuses agacent depuis la nuit des temps sans jamais en avoir fait un vrai mauvais élève. L'intérêt d'Ashes To Ashes, leur troisième album studio, était surtout de savoir si oui ou non les Américains allaient poursuivre et approfondir l'aération musicale orchestrée sur Evolve, un EP intermédiaire sorti en 2012 et bourré d'arrangements divers et variés visants à rendre un titre comme "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" difficilement imputable à CHELSEA GRIN. L'ombre d'un destin "à la WE BUTTER THE BREAD WITH BUTTER" planait sur cette sortie comme une chape de plomb. Souvenons-nous ensemble de Projekt Herz, l'EP des teutons qui a servi de transition à Goldkinder, un opus radicalement différent de tout ce que le groupe avait l'habitude de proposer en matière de Deathcore Nintendo. Sept ans après sa formation, la troupe d'Alex Koehler le bien nommé avait elle aussi droit à sa dose d'évolution. Sauf que voilà...
Entre My Damnation et Ashes To Ashes, les modulations se comptent sur le doigt d'une main ou d'un moignon. Non, CHELSEA GRIN n'a pas changé de politique et non, Evolve n'était pas cette noix de vaseline censée faciliter la pénétration. Le problème, c'est que les quelques idées perçues sur cet EP n'étaient pas des plus mauvaises, et qu'un remaniement, aussi soft soit-il, aurait surement mieux valu que ces grandes phrases vides. Reprenant à son compte le Deathcore sombre et lourdaud de l'opus précédent, le combo en est désormais réduit à enfoncer des portes ouvertes. Car qu'il s'agisse du groove balançant des guitares, des breakdowns en hypotension, des leads menaçants ou des cris perçants d'Alex Koehler, il n'est désormais plus question de découverte mais de redite. Comme d'usure, les promesses "d'album le plus heavy jamais composé etc..." s'envolent rapidement et la piste d'un disque "recoupant les atouts de Desolation Of Eden, My Damnation et Evolve" est à exclure. Le Deathcore de CHELSEA GRIN est devenu une bouillie granuleuse, teintée de Djent sur certains titres ("Nightmares") et illuminé d'une poésie positive, seul changement notoire par rapport au plus que correct My Damnation de 2011. Le pire, c'est qu'il était surement plus facile de trouver un morceau marquant sur le pourtant très décrié Desolation Of Eden ("Sonnet Of The Wretched" pour ma part) et ses onze compos que sur ce "Ashes To Ashes" et ses quinze propositions. Avec cinq singles parus en amont de la sortie officielle du CD, CHELSEA GRIN avait un brin anticipé son aura, mais ni "Angels Shall Sin, Demons Shall Pray", ni "Playing With Fire", ni "Sellout", ni "Clockwork", ni "Letters" ne sont les tubes attendus. Tout au plus, il s'agit de créations potables, moyennes, dignes de la médiocrité ambiante et de l'indifférence technique et émotionnelle que suscite cette galette. Une culture du presque vide qu'on épargnait encore généreusement à ces garçons, au vu du potentiel exprimé avec audace sur leurs premiers brouillons. Mais plus maintenant. Car avec tant de kilomètres dans les pattes, CHELSEA GRIN avait pour devoir moral d'au moins provoquer sa chance, même si ça devait passer par une piste insupportable comme le fût "Oblivion" il y a trois ans. Je n'aurais au moins pas eu à vous dire que cet album m'a ennuyé du début à la fin, malgré Alex Koehler, malgré la parenthèse instrumentale "Ashes..." - "... To Ashes", malgré les discrètes œillères que j'arbore à mes dépends quand je parle de CHELSEA GRIN.
Je fais presque d'Ashes To Ashes une déception personnelle, alors que pour la majorité d'entre vous, il ne s'agit que d'un maillon supplémentaire dans une chaine rouillée par le synthétisme. Après avoir su proposer à ses ouailles cet imperceptible (ou perceptible ?) détail qui sauvait les apparences sur chaque opus, CHELSEA GRIN vient de pondre son disque le plus indigent à ce jour. Celui qui rappelle hélas que la réputation d'un ATTILA ou d'un EMMURE a aussi débuté par de petits riens... Le début de l'effet papillon ?
