Ne connaissant THY FINAL PAIN que de réputation, c’est finalement sans sourciller que je me suis jeté à corps perdu sur la promo de ce qui devait être leur petit dernier : …Of Life And Death. Sauf qu’entre temps, de l’eau a coulé sous les ponts et le quatuor allemand, qui compte quand même dans ses rangs deux membres de DEBAUCHERY, m’a pris au dépourvu en sortant un nouveau opus intitulé Desire, Freedom And Confusion dont nous ne ferons pas l’éloge aujourd’hui. Je dois dire qu’avec ce disque, j’ai retrouvé mes sensations. Ça faisait belle lurette que je n’avais plus gouté un Death Metal d’aussi bonne facture et c’est étrange, mais ma ferveur pour le style ne s’en retrouve que confirmée. Je pensais m’être égaré ou avoir perdu la flamme qui m’animait mais finalement, la claque infligée par nos amis teutons remet les idées en place. Second opus d’une portée de trois, …Of Life And Death marque les esprits par son efficacité imparable.
Avec les allemands, c’est du discours direct, pas du conditionnel passé. THY FINAL PAIN te rentre dans le lard au bout d’un échauffement qui aura duré 11 secondes, montre en main. Le temps nécessaire pour réaliser un semblant d’intro avant d’attaquer le bout de gras. Les grands philosophes de ce monde s’éclipsent poliment au profit de cette citation osée mais ô combien réaliste de Mc Circulaire : « Pas d’amour, pas de tendresse, ce soir c’est Bagdad dans tes fesses ». Et effectivement, THY FINAL PAIN pilonne les muqueuses avec son concentré de Death Metal à la fois rétro et moderne. Pour l’originalité, on repassera. Ce disque ne contient aucune trace de nouveauté, ni même une petite surprise qui viendrait rafraichir l’ambiance. C’est un four, une étuve dans laquelle on se retrouve enfermés pendant trois quarts d’heure. Lukas Nicol martèle ses futs avec une précision redoutable. Inutile de dire que rythmiquement parlant, le blast fais la loi et les bpm peuvent parfois frôler les 200 sur certaines accélérations comme celle de « Thoughts Of Disbelief ». Massif et compact, cet enregistrement propose onze compositions d’un calibre identique. On ne fera aucune distinction dès la première écoute entre, par exemple, « Embodiment Of Chaos » et « Redeemer ». Là où THY FINAL PAIN devient vraiment intéressant, c’est quand une volute de mélodie s’installe dans leurs créations. On s’en sort avec des morceaux groovys comme « When Angels Die » ou la finale « The Real Cruser » qui facilitent considérablement la déglutition. Sans faire preuve d’un excès de confiance ou d’un manque d’humilité, le quartet sait dans quel sens il marche. Rarement un disque n’aura démontré une telle efficacité, un équilibre aussi pur entre des parties épiques et d’autres plus expéditives. Il n’y a pas nécessairement d’alchimie qui opère mais plutôt un respect qui s’impose de lui-même. THY FINAL PAIN fait partie de ces groupes qui se font prendre au sérieux dès la première minute d’écoute. C’est une expérience très impressionnante.
Encore une fois, on est à des lieues des chefs-d’œuvre absolus en matière de Death Metal. …Of Life And Death est un hommage poignant, tout au plus. Mais il est tellement vibrant et moralisateur que, conquis, on ne peut que poser un genou à terre. Pas en signe de soumission mais de profond respect. Et ce n’est pas forcément qu’une question de vie ou de mort.
