La première inconnue qui concerne le dernier né d’AMON DIN réside en… son titre. La Toile, c’est génial mais on y trouve de tout. Alors on ne saura probablement jamais si « Dream » prend un « s » ou pas. La fiche informative promotionnelle de Manitou Music nous dit que non, le MySpace officiel nous dit que oui. On a même certains webzines qui oublient des mots et on se demande si au final, on s’en fout pas un peu… Personnellement, je préfère les gros noms sur le curriculum vitae de nos serbes à ce chipotage orthographique. NILE, GRAVE, BELPHEGOR, NAPALM DEATH, SLAYER ou encore MORBID ANGEL, c’est peut-être pas pour des clopinettes que les mecs d’AMON DIN ont ouverts tous ces groupes ronflants. Le meilleur moyen de s’en convaincre est de jeter un œil sur le parcours solo des slaves.
Et ce dernier n’est pas jonché de beaucoup de cadavres. En tant que groupe de Death old-school, on attendait peut-être plus de tripes sur notre chemin… Le dernier enregistrement du combo ne remonte pourtant qu’à 2006, mais là où l’enthousiasme retombe comme un soufflé, c’est quand on apprend que c’est en fait une simple réédition CD d’une K7 qui date de… 1999. AMON DIN traverse donc une période de vache maigre. C’était sans compter sur Where The Dreams No Longer Exist (au conditionnel, donc…) qui appuie sans tabou sur vos ecchymoses. Pas de surprise, en Serbie aussi, on sait comment fonctionne le Death Metal ! L’album s’ouvre sous les meilleurs hospices avec « Doom Of The Centuries ». A la croisée des mondes entre un SLAYER et un MORBID ANGEL, la musique proposée s’articule autour d’une lead guitare chauffée à blanc et d’une batterie en mouvement perpétuel. Mais l’équilibre est précaire. La continuité n’a finalement pas de quoi faire sauter au plafond. Tout se déroule sans heurts, dans une ambiance limite bon-enfant. Les partitions sont réglées comme du papier à musique (ça tombe bien) et il ne faut attendre que « Ime Y Kry » (et son introduction laponienne toute en chœurs) pour comprendre qu’ils connaissent aussi la polyvalence. Une composition au final assez changeante, qui casse totalement le rythme effréné de la galette. On ne retiendra que cet effort au moment de peser le pour et le contre. Trop de formations se cachent derrière une brutalité de façade et oublient l’essence même de la musique : l’émotion. AMON DIN cherche à faire passer quelque chose, un message. Bien que flou, c’est surtout l’intention qui est louable. Alors oui, ils ne s’y prennent pas très bien malgré un potentiel qui a déjà dû être maintes fois confirmé sur scène. Oui, « Murder Begins » n’est qu’une pâle copie d’une composition d’un groupe de garage. Oui, Chuck Schuldiner aurait honte devant l’amateurisme de « When The Sky Is Bleeding ». Mais aujourd’hui, on récompense plus le fond que la forme.
Et dans le fond, Where The Dreams No Longer Exist (masterisé au passage par le producteur de MORBID ANGEL) est un hommage aussi maladroit que sincère au Death de la vieille école. Merci au serbes de prendre le temps à contre-pied. De son vivant, Chuck Schuldiner aurait versé une petite larme. Pendant ce temps-là, la bougie du Death old-school fond comme neige au soleil… et AMON DIN est une bobèche.
