BATHORY ou l’une des Révolution du Black Metal. Géniteur au vrai sens du terme, Quorthon (de son vrai patronyme Thomas Forsberg) et ses premiers albums définirent et vulgarisèrent par la suite un genre aujourd’hui mondialement connu : le «Black Metal». Toujours en avance sur son temps et à la pointe de l’innovation et du non-conformisme, ce précurseur introduit tout d’abord avec Bloody, Fire, Death ce qu’on appellera le «Viking Metal», entendez par là un style de composition lorgnant du côté épique et héroïque, tout en puisant ses thèmes et ses textes dans les Sagas Vikings par exemple. S’ensuivra les deux suppléments de la trilogie Viking avec le bien nommé Hammerheart donc, et Twilight Of The Gods.
Si les deux autres opus sont brillants, c’est définitivement à Hammerheart que revient la palme d’or. Le premier album où l’on retrouve explicitement des atmosphères lyriques et païennes empruntées au vaste Panthéon Viking. C’est la nostalgie d’un Temps révolu qui nous guide tout au long de ces sept déclarations d’amour à la mythologie Nordique. De nombreux éléments extérieurs au Metal complètent ce tableau tels que le son de l’écume se brisant sur les parois granitiques et autres fjords, le carillon du clocher du village se mêlant aux flûtiaux des fêtes de village; ou encore les sabots de Sleipnir monté par son Maître le Dieu borgne Odin… Véritable hommage à ses ancêtres, Hammerheart pose les jalons d’un style grandiloquent où la nature et les préceptes transcendants ont une place primordiale.
Très inspiré pour la composition de ce qui constitue son cinquième album, Quorthon concède des arrangements intemporels, une interprétation magistrale comprenant des soli de toute beauté, fort en émotion et très bien écrits. Bien que l’on puisse reprocher au Suédois ses quelques approximations vocales, on n’en tiendra finalement pas rigueur tant ses imperfections sont touchantes et n’entachent en rien le haut degré de réussite de l’opus.
Allant des Heavy mid-tempo «Father To Son», «Home Of Once Brave», «Baptized In Fire and Ice» au splendide instrumental «Song To All Up High» en passant par l’épique «Shores In Flames» et les sublimes odes aux légendes ancestrales «Valhalla» et «One Road To Asa Bay», Hammerheart distille des riffs électriques et arpèges somptueux où se mêlent des parties tirées du folklore Nordique et des plans Black Metal des plus basique et efficace. Quant on pense qu’à l’origine du groupe il y avait un adolescent de 15 ans et qu’au final six ans plus tard, il achève une des pierre angulaire du style, on ne peut qu’être admiratif devant ce chef d’œuvre totalement envoûtant, d’où l’on ressort quasi en transe. Un des rares album qui donne vraiment la chair de poule de par l’éclat et la simplicité de ses morceaux. La production tribale alliée à des textes poignants (pour ceux férus de Mythologie Nordique, bien évidemment) ne peut en aucun cas laisser de marbre.
Un album novateur qui constitue à mon sens un des meilleurs disque de Metal de tous les temps… Une simple leçon de génie, en toute modestie. Doté de Mjolnir, Thor peut ainsi être fier de son descendant. On peut ainsi imaginer le regretté Quorthon assis à la droite d’Odin sirotant de l’hydromel dans la salle du banquet du Panthéon des Vikings, le Valhalla. Hammerheart représente encore un formidable vivier d’idées où bons nombres de formations sont venues y puiser et s’en inspirer…
Certains les ont comprises et assimilées, d’autres pas du tout, mais ceci est une autre histoire…
